A Homeowner's Insurance is typically not the top of the must-have list for home owners. However, it will provide you protection from financial loss when accidents do undue damage to your property. It can also protect the household from injuries and property damage you or any member of the family or propert can do to other people.

There are a number of homeowner policies to choose from depending on your housing situation. If you have a farm or a ranch, if you own a home, condominium or a detached unit, there will be a homeowners insurance policy that will fit you. Remember that your home is most likely your most important and most expensive investment, so a homeowner's policy will keep that investment protected. A homeowners insurance policy consists of various types of coverage combined in one single policy. This offers you much savings than if they were to be bought separately. They typically cover:

  • Property Damage. This protects your home and belongings in case they get damaged or destroyed by uncontrollable causes.
  • Liability Coverage. If you accidentally cause another person or another person's property to be injured or damaged, the insurance company will cover for the damage you caused.
  • Medical Payments. If someone gets harmed in your household due to an accident, or outside your household yet you were at fauly, you will be covered for their medical treatment.
  • Additional Living Expenses. If your house becomes uninhabitable for a certain amount of time, your insurance coverage will pay for your temporary stay in a motel or apartment.

The homeowners policy can also cover other aspects in your property which can include other structures within your property, precious collections, greeneries, and so on. The State of Virginia have regulation set for homeowners insurance especially for minimum coverage that should be included in all policies. Standard policies are referred to as:

  • HO-1. This covers damage caused by lightning or fire, hail or windstorm, volcanic eruption, theft, malicious mischief or vandalism, explosion, civil commotion, glass breakage, damage due to vehicles or aircraft, as well as personal liability.
  • HO-2. This covers all those listed in HO-1, but also includes snow or sleet, sudden building collapse, water leakage, heating or air-conditioning systems, hot water heating systems, falling objects, damage from electrical currents or wiring, and similar cases.
  • HO-3. This covers loss of physical property except when damage is caused by certain exclusions such as flood or earthquake, and those covered by HO-2, along with personal liability. This is considered most popular of homeowner insurance policies. When the dwelling is lost, replacement costs will be covered, and loss of personal property will be settled based on the actual cash value.

There are various other policies to choose from, including HO-4 for renters, HO-5 for comprehensive policy, and HO-6 for condominium owners. You can check with an insurance agent and discuss your particular needs.
